Overview. The Delco R4 fitted to most W123 diesels is loud, leaks, and on R-134a often lasts only 1–2 years. This kit swaps it for a Sanden SD7H15, the industry-standard ear-mount compressor, without permanently modifying the car. We were the first company to offer a Sanden kit for the W123.

Features

  • Precision steel brackets with yellow zinc finish, made in the USA
  • Custom fittings made only for this kit, in sizes not sold elsewhere
  • Parker Futura or Goodyear Galaxy full-barrier hose, rated for R-12 and R-134a
  • R-134a high-side charge port on the hose; low-side R-134a adapter included
  • OEM-compatible Delco connector, so the factory wiring plugs straight in

Fitment

  • 1980–83 240D and 1980–85 300D, 300CD, 300TD with a Delco R4 compressor
  • Visually confirm your car has an R4 before ordering (R4 photo)
  • Uses a Sanden SD7H15 Model 4709 (preferred) or 4272; the two are interchangeable

What’s included

  • Mounting brackets and metric DIN/ISO hardened hardware
  • High-pressure hose, compressor head to condenser (replaces the two original high-pressure lines)
  • Complete HNBR o-ring set for the whole A/C system
  • Delco male connector and terminals
  • New v-belt
  • Illustrated PDF installation instructions
  • Optional: Sanden SD7H15 (Model 4709 or 4272) compressor

Installation

No special tools are needed. All hoses come ready to install. The original liquid line (drier to TXV) and low-side suction lines stay in place, so check their condition first. For best results, also replace the receiver drier, TXV and pressure switch, and pair the kit with a parallel-flow condenser when running R-134a.

Product FAQs

How do I know my car has a Delco R4?

Compare your compressor with our R4 photo in the product gallery. If you aren't sure or cannot match it, contact us before ordering.

Can I keep running R-12?

Yes. Drain the PAG oil from the new compressor and refill with Double End Capped PAG 100. The type of PAG oil works well with R-12 and will have no problem mixing with PAG residue in the new compressor. Double End Capped PAG is specifically marked as such.

Do I need a hose crimping tool?

No. All hoses and hose adapters come ready to install.

What else should I replace?

A new receiver drier and TXV are required for the compressor warranty. We also recommend a new pressure switch, and replacing or rebuilding the three original hoses that remain. If you are using R-134a, replace the condenser with our Parallel-Flow Kit.

Will my A/C blow colder?

Not by itself. The compressor upgrade is about reliability. For colder air on R-134a, add our Parallel-Flow Condenser Kit

How long does installation take?

Bench-prepping the compressor and fitting the brackets and hose typically takes 2–4 hours. Removing the old compressor and flushing the system add to that. Times vary, and so we don't do precise estimates. It often takes an experienced tech an entire day. DIY-ers can consider it a weekend task.
