Dual-Stage Vacuum Actuator Diaphragm Cartridge Assembly

$59.95

Finally, a superior-quality dual-stage diaphragm cartridge assembly to rebuild Behr defrost and fresh-air flap actuators on a range of 1970s-1990s Mercedes. Sold individually; consider buying a complete kit for your vehicle as well.

  • For R107, W116, W123, W124, W126, W201 Mercedes
  • Complete press-fit cartridge: two diaphragms (27mm & 33mm depth), two drive pistons, and stainless spring
  • Choose eyelet (rivet) or clip (plastic clasp) linkage end
  • Linkage hardware included

Overview. Finally, a superior-quality cartridge assembly is available to rebuild the dual-stage vacuum actuators commonly found in R107, W123, W126, W124, W201. End the persistent vacuum leaks and poor A/C and heat performance by rebuilding with a top-notch replacement cartridge assembly from Klima Design Works.

With dual-stage actuators, the inner diaphragm (deep depth 33mm) is captive inside a non-serviceble press-fit cartridge, whereas the lead diaphragm ( shallow depth 27mm) is removable. When the inner diaphragm fails, the entire assembly must be replaced. The cartridge includes both diaphragms.

Fitment

Confirm visually (best way) or search by part number (mostly reliable). Note that there are two linkage styles to choose from:

  • Eylet-Style for riveted linkage (W116, R107, early W126). New linkage hardware included.
  • Clip-Style for reusable linkage clip (Late W126, W124, W201). Re-Use Existing Hardware.

Installation

Rebuild tips

  • WATCH OUR VIDEOS!!!
  • Old actuator housings have plastic that can be brittle: Open housings with 4 thin plastic strips (an old credit card works)
  • Clean dust and debris from the housing; don’t use lubricants (can use dimethicone / Pledge during install)
  • Stretch the diaphragm rim by hand just before closing the housing (required)
  • Test with a hand vacuum pump (e.g. Mityvac)

You may need to drill out a rivet to move the linkage across.

Product FAQs

Single-stage or dual-stage?

Dual-stage actuators have three positions, two vacuum chambers, and use two diaphragms. They have two vacuum lines attached to them. For example, on a W123 the defroster actuator is dual-stage, whereas the other actuators in the system are all single-stage.

Which linkage end do I need?

Look at how the linkage attaches to your actuator: a rivet through an eyelet, or a plastic clasp. All W123, W116 and R107s use eyelet style dual-stage actuators for the defrost. Early W126 uses a combination of both styles; later W126 is all clip-style. W201 and W124 always use clip-style.

My W124 has dual stage cartridges that are different in depth from one another? Does your cartridge assembly still fit?

Yes. W124s have three dual stage actuators, including one that is more limited in travel and depth. Our clip-style actuator will work in all three dual-stage actuators used in the W124. While the original cartridge in question has a shorter spring, the housing is ultimately what limits travel, and our cartridge works fine in operation.

Do I need to watch the install video to install these properly?

You betcha. If you're one of those people that has been rebuilding these actuators from cannibalized OE parts, you may have your own favored method for rebuilding these and feel confident in your skills. That's great, but please don't just dive in. New diaphragms have a slightly smaller rim diameter that needs to be stretched in the correct way so that the diaphragm tapers and rolls properly in operation. If you are using already stretched parts, you would not be aware of this requirement. We also introduce a safe way to open the housings that significantly reduces the risk of breaking the housing ears. So do yourself a favor and give the videos a watch!
